Rural Development Projects

Farm worker empowerment and upliftment

1. Camps:

Farm workers from the Caledon area are given the opportunity each year to experience emotional support and guidance through motivational talks and stimulating workshops.

From 17-19 April 2015, 200 farmworkers came to the Amana campsite from the Overberg region (Grabouw, Villiersdorp, Genadendal, Caledon and Bredasdorp).

The Hope and Reconciliation Trust made this camp possible through allocating funds for accommodation and meals for the farmworkers.

2.  Rural Gardening Project:

A prominent community leader from Mthata in the Eastern Cape approached the Hope and Reconciliation Trust with the idea of setting up a vegetable garden project in a rural community area. This provides the community with food, and a source of income. Furthermore, the community is learning new, valuable business and life skills.

With funds provided by the Hope and Reconciliation Trust, the community is in the process of establishing the garden. The landed has been worked, seeds have been planted and water pipes have been laid for irrigation. In the latest update the harvesting of the cabbage and potatoes had begun, and two people from the community were given employment. Recently, a 1o ooo litre water tank was erected in the garden.

The following vegetables are being planted:

- potatoes

- spinach

- green pepper

- beetroot

- cabbage

Community buy-in is fostered through working in collaboration with a local co-op, Douloi-Izicaka. We are very excited about this project!
